The tragic joke of human history January 28, 2007

I am quoting Join Galt in Atlas Shrugged-“is that on any of the altars men erected, it was always man whom they immolated and the animal whom they enshrined. It was always the animal’s attributes, not man’s, that humanity worshipped: the idol of instinct and the idol of force—the mystics and the kings—the mystics, who longed for an irresponsible consciousness and ruled by means of the claim that their dark emotions were superior to reason, that knowledge came in blind, causeless fits, blindly to be followed, not doubted—and the kings, who ruled by means of claws and muscles, with conquest as their method and looting as their aim, with a club or a gun as sole sanction of their power. The defenders of man’s soul were concerned with his feelings, and the defenders of man’s body were concerned with his stomach—but both were united against his mind.”

I’m Movin’ On
(Phillip White/Vincent Williams)
I’ve dealt with my ghosts and faced all my demons
Finally content with a past I regret
I’ve found you find strength in your moments of weakness
For once I’m at peace with myself
I’ve been burdened with blame, trapped in the past for too long
I’m movin’ on
I’ve lived in this place and I know all the faces
Each one is different but they’re always the same
They mean no harm but it’s time that I face it
They’ll never allow me to change
But I never dreamed home would end up where I don’t belong
I’m movin’ on
At last I can see life has been patiently waiting for me
And I know there’s no guarentee’s, but I’m not alone
There comes a time in everyone’s life
When all you can see are the years passing by
And I have made up my mind that those days are gone
I sold what I could and packed what I couldn’t
Stopped to fill up on my way out of town
I’ve loved like I should but lived like I shouldn’t
I had to lose everything to find out
Maybe forgiveness will find me somewhere down this road
I’m movin’ on
I’m movin’ on
Diogenes December 31, 2006

Announcer: Good afternoon, Diogenes. In keeping with your
reputation as a non-conformist, I see that you keep your bathtub
outside of your house?
Diogenes: The bathtub is my house.
Announcer: I see. Well there must be some advantage to that?
Diogenes: Certainly. No window can give a view like this, and if
the neighborhood goes bad, I can just walk off with the house.
Announcer: How did you earn your living?
Diogenes: I got a moonlighting job – begging. I went to every
statue in town and asked for money.
Announcer: Why statues?
Diogenes: It got me used to being refused. After a time, I tried my
Technique on people. I told each customer that if he had given to
Other beggars, then he should give to me as well. If not, he should
start with me.
Announcer: How did it go?
Diogenes: I lost 30 pounds and gained a philosophy.
Announcer: Why is it that people will give alms to the blind and
crippled, but not a philosopher?
Diogenes: People know that one day they could be blind or crippled,
but they never dream they will take up a philosophy.
Announcer: Diogenes, what is a wise man?
Diogenes: There is but a finger’s difference between a wise man and
a fool. If a man raises his first finger and speaks, people think
him wise. If he lifts his middle finger, they think him mad.
Announcer: Do you believe in the institution of marriage?
Diogenes: I believe in no institutions. Marriage does not exist -
there are only men who persuade and women who consent.
Announcer: What instructions will you leave for your funeral arrangements?
Diogenes: I want to be buried face-down. The world will soon be
turned topsy-turvy and I don’t want to present my backside to the
gods.
Announcer: Who will take care of the arrangements?
Diogenes: Whoever wants the house
Announcer: Well I see by the old sundial that it’s time to go. Any
last words of advice that you can leave us with?
Diogenes: Yes, ignore everything I say!

Existential crisis November 23, 2006

Perhaps it may not be prudent to elaborate on such an illusive subject “Existential crisis” in contemporary society, at a time like the present, where almost all fellow human beings face a much more urgent and practical economic crisis. The situation worsens even when we realize that science has failed us. Exactly where is science when one is ponders the eternal riddles? Such as, how did the universe originate? How long has it been around? Did matter begin with an explosion or by the word of God? What do we mean when we say that man is mortal? Obviously it’s not a Compliment!
Put in its simplest form, the problem is How is it possible to find meaning in an infinite world?
When individuals in contemporary society are confronted by such “big” questions, the majority are left exposed to religious predators while a tiny minority that have gone through the machinery of higher education and personal metamorphosis through the torment of experience are trapped in their own definition of reality, a personal philosophy or that of their intellectual guardians (personal hero’s and heroines) a philosophy seemingly scientific, but highly likely to be infested by logical fallacies, which mostly stem from stereotypes, cultural biases and what have you?
Even the ones that exceptionally get it right have to finally give up their courageous purist, for reality by its sheer complexity and boundlessness surpasses any model a finite being can bear. It seems paralysis of analysis is almost always inescapable in the pursuit for the truth. However, our salvation depends on it! And lurking behind those down-to-earth economic questions lay the “big” questions demanding to be answered more than ever before!
